Supply List For Bob Ross® Landscape Oil Painting
We highly recommend that you use only Bob Ross® oil paints and Bob Ross® paint brushes for your wet-on-wet oil paintings. The entire Bob Ross® oil painting method is based on the fact that an oil paint that is less dense will stick to one that is thicker. The Bob Ross® series of oil paints are manufactured so you can take advantage of this fact and achieve the beautiful results you desire. Otherwise, your end result is practically guaranteed to be a muddy mess.
The Bob Ross® brushes were designed to take advantage of the properties of the oil paints. Depending on the type of brush, the softness, hardness, and density of the Bob Ross® brushes vary so you can build the proper foundation of paint from background to foreground highlights. Do yourself a really big favor and use the Bob Ross® tools designed for this technique.
To Paint Most of the Bob Ross® Landscapes you will want to have the following:
Bob Ross® Oil Colors:
Titanium White Phthalo Green Phthalo Blue Prussian Blue Midnight Black Dark Sienna Van Dyke Brown Alizarin Crimson Sap Green Cadmium Yellow Yellow Ochre Indian Yellow Bright Red
Bob Ross® Base Coat:
Liquid White - this is the essential base coat of paint applied in most Bob Ross® landscape paintings. A very thin layer of Liquid White accomplishes two tasks: first it allows paints to be blended on canvas thus eliminating unnecessary mixing of paint on the palette, and second, it allows paint to be moved around on the canvas and set the stage for special effects such as shadows and mist.
Liquid Clear - is used for a basecoat on your black canvas and for special effects on white canvases.
Liquid Black - great for blocking in dark shadowy areas. Just be sure to apply a very thin coat of liquid black or you will have great difficulty getting subsequent layers of paint to stick properly. Liquid black also needs plenty of extra mixing in the can before you apply it to the canvas; otherwise you will get lots of dark and light streaks on the canvas. Be sure and shake up the can very well.

Brush Cleaning Supplies
- Bob Ross® Odorless Thinner 2qt.
- Thinner bucket with screen
- Brush-beater wastebasket - (some people use the Rubbermaid #2805. We found a wastebasket in Kmart's office supply department measuring 16x13x10 that works just fine)
- Brush-beater rack 10.75"x5.25"x5.75" that fits into the brush-beater wastebasket
Canvas
Stretched Double-Primed Medium Canvas - When you paint at home pretty much any size canvas will do, however, you will get the best results with a 16 x 20 or an 18 x 24 stretched canvas. We recommend that you do not use fine or smooth surface canvases. The canvas needs to have a little "tooth" to utilize the wet-on-wet technique.
Based on our experience, we highly recommend the Bob Ross® Palette. It is very easy to see colors while you're mixing on the palette and the Bob Ross® Palette is easy to clean.
